The tradition of Lord Jagannath around the 12th century is when pipili appliquework got its start. The Gajapatis had previously made appliqué canopies and umbrellas for Jagannath’s yearly Ratha Jatra. These days, it is increasingly frequently used in home, ornamental, and holiday items. Particularly the vibrant appliqué fabric coverings of the three rathas of the deities during Rath Jatra, the appliqué goods are mostly employed during rituals and jatras of the deities. All three have a fundamental design, with the exception of colour variations. Additionally, pillows, chairs, and the ritual clothing worn by the gods all use appliqué work.
