The sambalpuri sari is woven in the end piece (pallu) with a variety of contrasting colours and designs. The sari’s appearance is associated with simplicity and has a tribal tinge to it. Normally, the sari is dyed to achieve the red, black, and white background colours. Today, however, the sari can be found in a variety of designs and colours while still retaining its originality. The warps are woven in such a way that the end piece is multicoloured. Pestle (rukha), hour-glass shaped drum (dambaroo), small flowers (kanthi phoola), bitter gourd (karela), peacock (mayur/mayuri), and fish are some of the patterns found in the sari.
